Fostering Future Generations
The NYK Group utilizes its resources to foster future generations who will lead the future.
NYK Mirai Project
The NYK Mirai project comprises a series of activities that nurture greater awareness of the close link between the maritime industry and our society — not only among Japan's youth but also stakeholders and the general public so that they can better understand maritime affairs and the seafaring life, resulting in an increase in "fans" of the maritime industry.
NYK Mirai Project Activities
Presentations by young officers and engineers
Throughout the year, our young officers and engineers conduct presentations about maritime affairs and the seafaring life, providing stories not often contained in textbooks, including accounts of real-life experiences on board.
Work experience events
During children's spring and summer holidays, we sponsor work experience events, during which we provide children with the opportunity to learn about ships and seafaring jobs through the use of a ship-handling simulator and unfamiliar tools used to take apart an engine.
- More Information:
Tours of port terminal
Throughout the year, we provide students tours of the Tokyo Ohi container terminal.
Ship tours
We sponsor public events to introduce ships and seafarers working on ships, mainly in Yokohama, by opening to the public the inside of a cargo vessel, like the bridge and engine room of an NYK-operated pure car and truck carrier (PCTC), which is usually difficult for the public to access.
International short-term student-exchange program
We conduct an international short-term student-exchange program between the NYK-TDG Maritime Academy (NTMA), which NYK operates in the Philippines, and national maritime schools in Japan.
Experience on board NYK-operated ship
For maritime school teachers, we provide opportunities to sail on an NYK-operated ship so that they can gain a better understand of seafaring and use the experience back at school.
