Exploiting DNA Developed over 130 Years

The NYK Group has pursued new advantages by taking on ambitious initiatives and realizing creative solutions throughout its history of more than 130 years. Our corporate culture - the product of this dynamic legacy - helps to pass on our positive corporate DNA to the next generation of employees. Another important way in which we do this is through job rotation, which enables employees to experience a variety of workplaces and broadens their network of colleagues. We establish advantages by approaching issues from the viewpoints of society or customers, formulating ideas ahead of competitors, and following through on initiatives with unflagging determination. Today, the corporate DNA we have inherited is driving an array of initiatives themed on leveraging creative solutions. In carrying out their day-to-day duties, all group employees share and put into practice our corporate DNA, which we clarified by establishing integrity, innovation, and intensity (3I's) as the NYK Group Values in 2007.
Onshore and on board operating vessels, more than 50,000 NYK Group personnel work as a team to operate businesses on a global scale. By extending employees' expertise through involvement in a wide range of duties, and heightening capabilities through a broad variety of stimulating training, we aim to produce personnel with the initiative to create advantages in any era.

Securing Seafarers from around the World

To realize safe and efficient vessel operations, the NYK Group fosters future senior seafarers through tie-ups with merchant marine academies around the world and by training students using cadet training ships, normal commercial vessels equipped with educational facilities (20 cadet rooms, classrooms, instructor rooms, etc.).

In June 2007, NYK and its business partner in the Philippines established and opened the NYK-TDG* Maritime Academy in Canlubang, on the outskirts of Manila.
The Philippines is one of the leading sources of seafarers for NYK, and we have long-standing programs in the country to recruit officer candidates and maintain and improve their quality. By offering university-level education, we are able to place greater priority on the development of management skills necessary for attaining senior positions in the future, while also allowing students to master the practical knowledge and technologies that they will require on the job. All these graduates have become NYK Group personnel.
On April 10, Filipino seafarer became the first NYK-TDG Maritime Academy graduate to be appointed to the prestigious rank of vessel captain since its establishment in 2007.
NYK looks to the NYK-TDG Maritime Academy as a key component in seafarer training and has high hopes for it both for the role that it will play in achieving safe ship operation and also for the effect that it will have on maintaining and improving the quality of Filipino seafarers.

Over 25 years of History, Our Manning Company in the Philippines

NYK-Fil Ship Management Inc. in the Philippines was jointly established by the NYK Group and the Transnational Diversified Group(TDG) in 1989 to train and develop Filipino seafarers for the Group and manage their deployment to its operating vessels.
NYK currently has Filipino seafarers deployed to work on more than 200 of the Group's operating vessels. The aim is for NYK-Fil Ship Management to produce Filipino seafarers who will eventually achieve the rank of captain and chief engineer by working in close collaboration with the NYK-TDG Maritime Academy and the seafarer training facility, built next to the academy. In recent years, we have been actively promoting Filipino personnel on board vessels with sophisticated skills for navigation and cargo work required such as very large crude-oil carriers (VLCCs) and LNG carriers.

Japanese Seafarers' Training Course

The NYK Group has a global network that builds on its core marine transport to provide an impressive array of transport services by ocean, land, and air, we recruit and train the wide range of personnel required by our operations. Formerly, the Group had been hiring to-be-licensed offshore staff and students who had gone through professional education. However, in fiscal 2006 we became the first shipping company in Japan to hire graduates from ordinary four-year universities to undergo extensive in-house training for positions on board vessels. Over the course of two years after joining the company, these employees receive education and onboard training that enables them to obtain seafarer licenses, after which they are provided with onboard experience as deck officers and engineers, eventually working toward the rank of captain and chief engineer. More than 120 employees (as of Apirl 2023) who earned their licenses in this manner are now working on ships all over the world. And we plan to continue this style of hiring in the future.
