NYK Uses Business Improvement Contest to Benefit Charity

April 24, 2018

On April 24, four members of NYK management overseeing the company’s Car Carrier Group donated 200,000 yen on behalf of the company to Médecins Sans Frontières Japon (MSFJ).* The donation was in recognition of the proposals for improvement in the operation of Pure Car and Truck Carriers (PCTCs) exceeding the target number of 100 in a company contest. This is NYK’s first initiative to reward employees’ business improvement efforts by making donations to charity.

1. Contest

NYK, which has the world's largest car carrier fleet of about 120 vessels, sponsored the contest to have a positive impact on society while improving the company’s service quality and realizing optimal operations through the excellent ideas of those in charge of operations, among others.

From July 2017 to January 2018, proposals for improvement were requested from about 20 PCTC operators at the Tokyo office. Over seven months, a total of 108 ideas were proposed, including those of a non-operational nature.

2. Donation

If the target of 100 proposals was achieved, a donation by NYK management was to be made to an organization selected by the employees through a vote, thus encouraging greater participation. Management was also honored to be a part of such a meaningful activity.

On April 23, four representatives of NYK management — i.e., Koichi Chikaraishi, representative director and senior managing corporate officer; Hiroyuki Okamoto, former managing corporate officer and current managing executive officer of Yusen Logistics Co. Ltd.; Takaya Soga, managing corporate officer; and Kotaro Seki, corporate officer — made the donation to MSFJ in commemoration of the achievement. MSFJ then made a presentation about their activities to the NYK Car Carrier Group.

NYK aims to improve its service quality and realize optimal operations by continuing activities such as this, as well as carrying out the company’s duty as a good corporate citizen.
