the NYK Group's Diverse Clubs: The Nibiki-Kai

What is the Nibiki-Kai?

The NYK Group offers voluntary club activities to promote camaraderie and employee welfare. Currently, there are 19 clubs, including provisional member groups, spanning sports and cultural activities, with approximately 450 members participating. This article highlights the activities of the yachting, swimming, and haiku clubs.

Swimming Club: Runner-Up at the 63rd All-Mitsubishi Swimming Tournament!

On August 25, 2024, the Swimming Club achieved second place at the 63rd All-Mitsubishi Swimming Tournament. Our company played a dual role as both a participant and event organizer. The tournament ran smoothly thanks to the cooperation of individuals beyond the regular swimming club members, such as announcers, marshals, and timekeepers.
The club's impressive performance was a team effort, from young members to alums, with the women's relay team playing a crucial role. This resulted in a historic best finish for our group, significantly energizing the event.
Although the swimming club's summer season has concluded, off-season training sessions will continue in preparation for next summer.

Yachting Club: Runner-Up at the 65th All-Mitsubishi Yachting Championship!

The Yachting Club secured second place at the 65th All-Mitsubishi Yachting Championship on September 7, 2024. Six companies participated in this fiercely contested event, which included athletes who had previously won the All-Japan Intercollegiate Championship. Our group entered one boat with a two-person team.
Despite a spirited competition in which our sails proudly displayed the group logo, we narrowly missed first place. The team is committed to rigorous training and aims to win next year's championship.

Haiku Club: Highlights from the Inaugural Activity

The Haiku Club is the newest addition, established in 2024. On October 30, the club held its first activity: an orientation session. Thirteen members gathered during lunch, introducing themselves and receiving a lecture from the club leader on future activities and the art of crafting haiku.
A highlight of the session was the appreciation of past works created by experienced haiku poets. Even beginners engaged with sharp observations and questions, making it a fulfilling experience. Participants shared various impressions, such as, "Appreciating haiku is similar to appreciating art," "Reviewing the rules of haiku helped me visualize the activities," and "It felt like my right brain was being activated."

Upon the establishment of the club, the club leader composed the following haiku:

"Haiku Club departs,
Sailing seas of creation,
Dreams become our sails."

The club will continue to explore and enjoy the charm of haiku, discovering new insights and ways to appreciate this art form together.
