The NYK Group’s top news stories for 2013 were as follows:
 
Advancement in Energy and Offshore Business
 
January: KNOT developed a business relationship with the Repsol Group under a time-charter contract for five years plus an option for crude oil transport off Brazil.
February: NYK Energy Transport (Atlantic) Ltd. and GDF Suez entered into a time-charter agreement for Grace Barleria.
April: KNOT Offshore Partners LP completed an initial public offering of common units, which were offered to the public for trading on the New York Stock Exchange.
May: NYK established a consortium company, Japan LNG Investment, in the U.S. state of Louisiana together with the Mitsubishi Corporation to possibly participate in the Cameron LNG project.
June: Oil production started on FPSO Cidade de Paraty, a floating production, storage, and offloading (FPSO) unit chartered by Petroleo Brasileiro S.A. and deployed for the BM-S-11 consortium.
July: NYK concluded a 20-year contract with the BM-S-11 consortium for the charter and operation of two additional FPSO units, FPSO Cidade de Maricá and FPSO Cidade de Saquarema.
December: KNOT FSO 1 AS signed a time-charter contract with Total E&P Norge AS for a newly converted floating, storage, and offloading (FSO) unit.
 
Receipt of Numerous Environmental Awards
 
June: NYK and MTI received an award for excellence at the 40th Environmental Awards in recognition of the NYK Group’s development and operation of an energy-saving air-lubrication system.
July: Soyo, an NYK-owned coal carrier, was selected as the 2012 Ship of the Year.
October: NYK received the highest award at the 2013 Nikkei Global Environmental Technology Awards in recognition of the NYK Group’s use of an energy-saving air-lubrication system for vessels.
November: For a second consecutive year, NYK was selected by CDP to be included in the Climate Disclosure Leadership Index (CDLI).
In addition, at the 2013 Eco-Products Awards, Japan’s Minister of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism Award, one of the highest awards in the eco-services category, was presented jointly to NYK, MTI, and Oshima Shipbuilding Co. Ltd. in recognition of the NYK Group’s use of an energy-saving air-lubrication system on its vessels.
 
Continuing Inclusion in Socially Responsible Investment Indexes
 
February: NYK was included in the Bronze Class of the 2013 Sustainability Yearbook compiled by RobecoSAM AG in Switzerland.
March: For a sixth consecutive year, NYK was recognized as one of the World’s Most Ethical Companies by the U.S. think tank Ethisphere Institute.
In addition, NYK was selected for the UK-based FTSE Group’s FTSE4Good Index, a major socially responsible investment (SRI) index that has included NYK for many years.
September: NYK was selected for the Dow Jones Sustainability Indices for an 11th straight year.
 
Receipt of Numerous Awards for Its Cruises
 
July: The NYK Group’s Crystal Cruises was selected as the World's Best Large-Ship Cruise Line in the annual Travel + Leisure’s “World’s Best Awards” readers' survey.
October: Condé Nast Traveler magazine (U.S.) readers voted Crystal Cruises as the “Best Cruise Line” (midsize) for 2013, a record 20th time that the company has received this honor. Crystal’s triumphant score of 94.4 was the highest overall score of all small-, midsize-, and large-ship cruise lines.
 
Development of Well-Trained Seafarers
 
June: Two ceremonies were held at the NYK-TDG Maritime Academy (NTMA) — an opening ceremony for the sparkling new crew training facilities, maritime academy, classrooms, and lodgings, and then an entrance ceremony for the incoming class.
September: NTMA held a ceremony for its graduating class of 106 students, who had completed three years of basic classes and training courses, and one year of training on board NYK training vessels.
 
Giving Back to the Community, Helping Those in Need
 
June to July, September to November: NYK volunteers participated in revitalization activities in area devastated by the Great East Japan Earthquake.
November: The NYK Group provided free transport of safe drinking water to Cambodia as part of the Tenku no Mori Project being conducted by the National Federation of UNESCO Associations in Japan.
In addition, the NYK Group donated 100,000 U.S. dollars and provided free transport of supplies to those directly affected by deadly Typhoon Haiyan, which struck the Philippines.
 
Advancements by the NYK Group Network
 
March: Wing Maritime Service Corporation held a ceremony to mark the entry into service of Tsubasa, an NYK Group tugboat featuring a hybrid propulsion system.
August: Nippon Cargo Airlines Co. Ltd. was rated well on its environmental performance by the Development Bank of Japan Inc.
October: Operations began at NYK Bulk & Projects Carriers Ltd., the product of the merger of two key wholly owned NYK subsidiary companies — i.e., NYK-Hinode Line Ltd. and NYK Global Bulk Corporation.
October to November: Yusen Real Estate Corporation received the Project Award given by the Real Estate Journalists Association of Japan, and the fiscal 2013 Achievement Award given by the Japan Association for Real Estate Sciences.
