NYK Promotes Woman to Chief Engineer for First Time

Advancing a workplace where a diverse range of people can shine both on land and at sea

On April 1, Miki Yano became the first woman in NYK’s nearly 140-year history to be promoted to the rank of chief engineer.

Since joining NYK in 2011, Yano has gained experience on board LNG carriers, car carriers, and other vessels. She has also been active in many fields, including using the knowledge and skills she has gained on board to support the operation of cruise ships at an office on land.

The company has hired female seafarers since 2004 and currently has 33 worldwide, both on land and at sea. NYK continues to promote the creation of a workplace environment where diverse human resources can play an active role.

Upon hearing the news, Chief Engineer Yano commented: "Becoming a chief engineer was a goal for me. Now that I have achieved it, this moment will be a new start. I will continue to work hard to acquire skills and knowledge and aim to become a chief engineer trusted by those around me."
