NYK Participates in Singapore Maritime Week 2025

Promotes NYK’s initiatives for a sustainable maritime industry

NYK participated in Singapore Maritime Week 2025, one of Singapore's most significant international maritime events, from March 24 to 28. On the opening day, NYK president Takaya Soga took part in a panel discussion titled “Market Outlook for Shipping in 2025 and Beyond” and expressed NYK's commitment to driving the decarbonization of the maritime industry through zero-emission fuels such as ammonia.

As specific initiatives to promote decarbonization, Takaya Soga introduced the decarbonization strategy for marine transport in NYK's medium-term management plan and the use of ammonia as a marine fuel, including the tugboat Sakigake, the world's first commercial-use ammonia-fueled ship, completed in August last year. In addition, he mentioned the enhancement of the NYK-TDG Maritime Academy, a merchant marine academy that NYK has been operating jointly with a local partner in the Philippines since 2007, from the perspective of securing seafarers for next-generation fueled ships. He also expressed his views on how the maritime industry is affected by geopolitical risks that have been increasing in recent years.

On the fourth day, Takahiro Rokuroda, general manager of NYK’s Next Generation Fuel Business Group, took part in a panel discussion and expressed his views on ensuring the safety of seafarers on ammonia-fueled ships based on the results of the development of the ammonia-fueled tugboat and an ammonia-fueled ammonia gas carrier that is scheduled for completion in November 2026.

In addition, NYK set up a special booth over three days from March 25 to 27 to communicate our initiatives to as many visitors as possible. At the booth, we used video to introduce three initiatives contributing to decarbonization, digitalization, and talentdevelopment based on the MOU (Memorandum of Understanding) concluded with the Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore in July last year. In addition, we exhibited a model ship of Sakigake and a model of ammonia bunkering boom.*
