NYK Group Issues NYK Group TNFD Report 2024 — A Passion for Planetary Wellbeing

The NYK Group issued “NYK Group TNFD Report 2024 — A Passion for Planetary Wellbeing” on March 17. The report is based on the recommendations of the Taskforce on Nature-related Financial Disclosures (TNFD), a global initiative that aims to create a framework for assessing the impacts of corporate activities on the natural environment and biodiversity, as well as for disclosing nature-related information.

This report focuses on international shipping, one of the core businesses of the NYK Group, and introduces the LEAP approach* proposed by TNFD to assess nature-related issues. It explains the foundational pillars of TNFD recommendations: “Governance,” “Strategy,” “Risk and Impact Management,” and “Metrics and Targets.” In particular, under the "Strategy" section, the "Analysis of Priority Locations" examines all ocean areas where the NYK Group's vessels operate. By overlaying vessel positional information from the past year with 16 indicators related to natural capital, we identify ocean areas that require attention in our business activities. Additionally, we feature our unique initiatives for protecting natural capital under the theme "Giving Back to the Oceans."

The NYK Group joined the TNFD Forum in December 2023 and became a TNFD Early Adopter** in January 2024, progressing preparations for information disclosure in line with TNFD recommendations.

Additionally, we announced our Nature Positive*** Declaration in October 2024. In November of the same year, we joined the 30by30 Alliance for Biodiversity,**** promoting activities to achieve “nature positive.”

The NYK Group aims to enhance sustainable corporate value by balancing corporate growth with natural capital conservation.

On March 10, 2023, the NYK Group released its medium-term management plan Sail Green, Drive Transformations 2026 — A Passion for Planetary Wellbeing . The NYK Group is promoting growth strategies with ESG at the core, based on the Group’s mission statement of “Bringing value to life” and a new corporate vision for 2030, which reads, “We go beyond the scope of a comprehensive global logistics enterprise to co-create value required for the future by advancing our core business and growing new ones.”

* LEAP Approach
TNFD developed an integrated method to assess nature-related risks and opportunities systematically. It consists of four phases: Locate (your interface with nature), Evaluate (your dependencies and impacts on nature), Assess (your nature-related risks and opportunities), and Prepare (to respond to nature-related risks and opportunities and to report on your material nature-related issues).

** Companies registered as TNFD Early Adopters by January 10, 2024, were announced at the World Economic Forum Annual Meeting (Davos Meeting) in Davos, Switzerland, held January 15-19, 2024.

*** Nature Positive
Halting and reversing biodiversity loss to put nature on a path to recovery.

**** 30by30 Alliance
The 30by30 Alliance for Biodiversity was launched by a group of voluntary companies, local governments, and organizations to promote efforts to certify areas that have been conserved by the private sector as other effective area-based conservation measures (OECMs), as well as to expand the current protected areas in Japan (approximately 20% of land areas and 13% of sea areas).
