Becoming a competitive group company through training for local employees
From 2 to 7 December, NYK held Global NYK Group Week 2024, a training program at the Tokyo head office for 16 nominated employees from NYK Group companies working at overseas bases.
The training program’s goals are to build global networks within the Group, reaffirm the Group’s mission, vision, and values,1 and increase commitment to business operations and Group engagement through direct dialogue with the NYK president and management.
Participants took part in a workshop to make the D&I Promise2 their own, leadership training, group work to learn about innovation methods from the NYK Digital Academy,3 and group discussions with NYK President Takaya Soga and other executives, actively exchanging opinions.
During the final two days, the participants toured Shikoku, the smallest of Japan’s four major islands, to learn more about the roots of the NYK Group. They visited the birthplace and childhood home of Yataro Iwasaki, the founder of the Mitsubishi Mail Steamship Company, the forerunner of the NYK Group. They stopped by Imabari Shipyard, where many NYK vessels have been built. And they ascended the 785 stone steps to the main shrine of Kotohira-gu, more familiarly known as “Kompira-san,” a Shinto shrine dedicated to safe navigation for seafarers. These visits allowed the participants to deepen their understanding of the NYK Group's mission of “Bringing value to life.”
Of the more than 35,000 employees in the NYK Group, approximately 80% are local employees. We aim to be a corporate group where each of the 35,000 people around the world can work with vitality, demonstrating their individuality and abilities. NYK will work to achieve this by providing training and career paths4 and continually improving our corporate value.
