Promoting biodiversity conservation efforts
NYK Executive Officer Yuko Tsutsui participated in a panel discussion on December 3 at the Keidanren Nature Conservation Council 2024 Symposium, which was jointly hosted by the Council and the Japan Conference for 2030 Biodiversity Framework (J-GBF)1 (Secretariat: Japan’s Ministry of the Environment).
The symposium is held every year to publicize trends in biodiversity. This year's theme was how corporate management should work toward ”living in harmony with nature”, the 2050 vision of the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework, and enhance corporate value through nature-positive management.2 Keynote speeches were given by experts, companies introduced their initiatives for biodiversity conservation, and free discussions were held among participants who actively discussed biodiversity and nature positive.
A panel discussion that included Tsutsui and Shogoro Fujiki, CEO of Biome, Inc., examined the "Challenge of Visualizing the Value of Nature" together with Professor Akie Iriyama of Waseda Business School (Graduate School of Business and Finance). Tsutsui introduced NYK’s participation in the ANEMONE Consortium3 as an example of industry-government-academia co-creation for visualizing nature’s value.
In November 2024, NYK released its Nature Positive Declaration.4 NYK’s environmental DNA sampling of the open ocean and the company’s "Yu no Mori" reforestation project align with efforts to realize a nature-positive economy.
