On March 23, NYK signed an industry-academia collaboration contract with Tama Art University (TAU).
In April, NYK and TAU will begin a collaboration on "Kraft & Loop: Seafarer's Uniform Design" under the theme of "redesigning the environment on board ships"
NYK executive officer Hideki Suzuki with Professor Tatsuya Wada of TAU’s Faculty of Art and Design
Background
In 2019, NYK established the NYK Digital Academy, a human resources development initiative to develop talent who will lead the NYK Group in the future. As of fiscal 2022, a total of 61 staff members had participated in the program.
In 2022, the team members proposed an initiative to "create a mechanism for new value and standards of judgment required in logistics to permeate society" based on the concept of "Heart-moving logistics."
As part of this initiative, a Seafarer Uniform Design Contest was held from September 2022 to January 2023 in collaboration with TAU.
Collaboration Outline
The theme of the new collaboration is "re-designing the environment on board ships" from the perspective of "Discover issues through “design thinking” and "Study circulation systems for a circular economy”.
Seafarer uniforms will be reviewed from the perspective of solving social issues.
- Name: Kraft & Loop: Seafarers' Uniform Design
- Description: To examine examples of Kraft (long-lasting use) and Loop (circulation) in society and jointly develop a prototype design of a seafarer's uniform.
- Period: April 1, 2023 – March 31, 2024
Future Outlook
NYK aims to improve the quality of seafarers' lives and work by developing seafarer uniforms that incorporate the ideas and creativity of TAU and will study the possibility of practical application.
