On March 9, the coal carrier Kagura for the Chugoku Electric Power Co., Inc. (hereinafter EnerGia; Headquarters: Hiroshima Prefecture) was delivered at Oshima Shipbuilding Co. Ltd. (Saikai City, Nagasaki Prefecture). A naming and delivery ceremony took place on the same day and was attended by Shigeru Ashitani, representative director, vice president and senior managing executive officer of EnerGia; Hitoshi Nagasawa, president of NYK; and many other persons concerned.

Under a long-term transport contract with EnerGia, the vessel will use carbon offsets* to theoretically reduce its greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions to zero for the entire contracted voyage, making the marine transport of coal under the contract carbon neutral. Specifically, CERs (certified emission reductions) as credits (emission rights) for the GHG emissions of the entire contract voyage have been procured to offset the GHG emissions.

The ship's name, Kagura, is derived from Iwami Kagura,** a masked traditional performance art loved by the people of Japan’s Chugoku region. The vessel was named by EnerGia with the hope that the ship will be loved by people for a long time.

On March 10, 2023, the NYK Group released its medium-term management plan “Sail Green, Drive Transformations 2026 — A Passion for Planetary Wellbeing. ” The NYK Group is promoting growth strategies with ESG at the core, based on the Group’s basic philosophy of “Bringing value to life” and a new corporate vision for 2030, which reads, “we go beyond the scope of a comprehensive global logistics enterprise to co-create value required for the future by advancing our core business and growing new ones.

In addition, NYK has established "Sail GREEN" as the company’s ESG brand to emphasize NYK's efforts to reduce GHG emissions through the transport of goods and contribute to the eco-friendly supply chains of customers, regardless of the mode of transport (e.g., by sea or land, through terminals, etc.). This initiative is part of that.

To vigorously promote ESG management, our group will provide carbon-neutral transportation through various means, focusing on fuel conversion and improvements in energy efficiency.

Compensating for some or all of the GHG emissions that would be difficult to reduce by purchasing GHG emission reductions and absorption credits realized elsewhere, or by participating in projects that reduce or absorb GHGs in other locations.

** Iwami Kagura
A traditional performance art from the Iwami region of western Shimane Prefecture. It is based on Japanese mythology, in which dancers wear gorgeous costumes with gold and silver threads and expressive masks, accompanied by the distinctive melancholy sound of flutes and lively taiko music.
