In December 2022, NYK offered scholarships to 82 outstanding students studying at Shanghai Maritime University and Dalian Maritime University in China. This marked the 22nd consecutive year for NYK to fund the education of students at these two universities. Both ceremonies were held online to prevent the spread of COVID-19.

On 7 December, an online ceremony was held for 36 students offered NYK scholarships at Shanghai Maritime University (SMU). Mr. Shi Xin, vice-president of SMU, reviewed SMU’s cooperation with NYK and offered his sincere appreciation for NYK’s continuous 22-year devotion to maritime education, which fully reflects NYK’s strong ambition to remain a socially responsible corporate citizen.

Additionally, on 8 December, an online ceremony was held for 46 students of Dalian Maritime University (DMU) to recognize their academic excellence and fine demeanor. They were encouraged to develop themselves into socially responsible and intelligent young adults having international visions. Those in attendance included Xu Minqiang, deputy party secretary at DMU.

At the ceremonies for both universities, NYK's chief representative for China, Hiroyasu Takaizumi, paid tribute to the university officials who continued to provide students with a safe place to study despite the global COVID-19 outbreak. He also recognized the students for not forgetting their true duties and working hard in their studies. He additionally mentioned the importance of the global logistics network centered on the shipping industry, and gave words of encouragement to the students to use the expertise and experience gained at the university in the shipping industry in the future.

NYK has continued this activity to fulfill the company’s social responsibility via educational social contribution activities and has now awarded dedicated scholarships to a total of 1,447 students at DMU and SMU. The NYK Group will continue to support maritime education to contribute to global trade and society.

In February 2021, NYK released the “NYK Group ESG Story,” which aims to further integrate ESG into the company’s management strategy and promotes activities that contribute to the achievement of the SDGs through business activities. In March this year, NYK released the updated “NYK Group ESG Story 2022,” which introduces initiatives for integrating ESG into the Group’s management strategies set forth in the "NYK Group ESG Story" and provides a partial explanation of the Group’s sustainable growth strategy from a long-term perspective. To strongly promote ESG management, the NYK Group will promote the creation of new value as a sustainable solution provider.
