On September 9, NYK held its annual roundtable discussion on safe vessel operations with executive officers, seafarers on board and land, and staff involved in operations such as sales and operations. The meeting, held online due to COVID-19 last year, was conducted in a hybrid format (virtually and in person). A total of 170 staff was attended the meeting and executives, Captain and Chief engineer openly exchanged opinions about the safe operation of vessels that the NYK Group manages and operates.
This meeting is part of NYK’s Remember Naka-no-Se safety campaign* and is chaired by NYK president Hitoshi Nagasawa, who oversees NYK’s Safety and Environmental Management Committee.** The gathering allows top management to exchange opinions directly with captains and chief engineers and further develop practical measures with respect to safe operation of our vessels.
A total of seven current captains and chief engineers participated in the meeting from the liquefied natural gas (LNG) carrier Grace Freesia and a conference room in the head office.
The members actively exchanged opinions on a wide range of topics, such as sharing the situation with COVID-19 surrounding the vessels, crew training, and proposals for preventing accidents and troubles. President Nagasawa commented, "I would like you to continue to make suggestions for improvements, including the work environment, and we will discuss them thoroughly within the management team. I hope everyone is highly aware of ESG management onboard and continues safe operation."
As one of the goals for realizing ESG management, NYK Group promotes "Thorough safety management aiming for zero serious accidents." In addition, NYK Group has set "safety" as one of the three material issues at the core of our management, and we are working on various measures. NYK Group will continue to strengthen our safety management system further.

To ensure that the lessons learned from the Diamond Grace oil spill on July 2, 1997, remain fresh, NYK conducts a two-month safety campaign every year from July 1. This is the 25th year this campaign has been held. During the campaign period, we hold this fleet safety management meeting, the NYK president exchanges opinions with ship captains and chief engineers at a round-table conference, and we conduct accident-response training that simulates serious accidents such as ship groundings and collisions.
** Safety and Environmental Management Committee
