On July 1, NYK held its annual fleet safety management meeting with domestic and overseas shipowners and ship-management companies. At this year’s meeting, which was conducted online, safety activities, including accident case studies to foster and improve safety awareness, were shared. The meeting was conducted in two parts, one in Japanese and one in English on the same day. 309 people from 92 companies in Japan and overseas participated.
This annual fleet safety management meeting is part of NYK’s Remember Naka-no-Se safety campaign. Based on the lessons learned from the Diamond Grace oil spill in Tokyo Bay in July 1997,* this campaign is held every year with the purpose of reconfirming with shipowners, management companies, and other partners the importance of safe operation.
This meeting comprised an agenda that included accident case studies, NYK’s safety efforts, and a review of last year's safety activities, as well as crew change issues due to the COVID-19 pandemic, NAV9000** quality assurance activities, and the deliberation status of the 78th session of the Marine Environment Protection Committee (MEPC). For the NYK Group, safety is an immovable core tenet that we consider to be the foundation upon which ESG management exists. NYK will continue to cooperate with partner companies to engage in sea shipping services with the aim of achieving zero serious accidents.
In February 2021, NYK released the “NYK Group ESG Story,” which aims to further integrate ESG into the company’s management strategy and promotes activities that contribute to the achievement of the SDGs through business activities. In March this year, NYK released the updated “NYK Group ESG Story 2022,” which introduces initiatives for integrating ESG into the Group’s management strategies set forth in the "NYK Group ESG Story" and provides a partial explanation of the Group’s sustainable growth strategy from a long-term perspective. To strongly promote ESG management, NYK will continue to create new value as a sustainable solution provider.

*Remember Naka-no-Se
To ensure that the lessons learned from the Diamond Grace oil spill on July 2, 1997, remain fresh, NYK conducts a two-month safety campaign every year from July 1. This is the 25th year this campaign has been held. During the campaign period, we hold this fleet safety management meeting, the NYK president exchanges opinions with ship captains and chief engineers at a round-table conference, and we conduct accident-response training that simulates serious accidents such as ship groundings and collisions.
