On December 10 at NYK’s 15th Environmental Management Conference, held online this year, three companies were recognized for their improvement of company value. The three — Keihin Dock Co., Ltd., UNI-X NCT Corporation, and NYK Bulk & Projects Carriers Ltd. — were selected from among 40 domestic NYK Group companies and presented with certificates of commendation on December 23.
NYK holds this conference once a year with NYK Group companies to share information on environmental practices and strengthen environmental management. The three recognized group companies were highly commended for connecting their environmental measures with their business activities as part of the NYK Group’s ESG management practices. Details of each company’s measures are provided below.
Keihin Dock Co., Ltd.
- Based on the recognition that safety and the environment are one and the same, a comprehensive safety inspection of the plant was conducted.
- The company has taken on the challenge of building next-generation fuel ships as an environmentally conscious factory.
UNI-X NCT Corporation
- The NYK Tokyo Container Terminal and NYK Kobe Container Terminal have set a goal to achieve carbon neutrality by 2040.
- As the first step toward this goal, UNI-X NCT has decided to introduce four of the latest transfer cranes, which can have their diesel engines replaced by hydrogen fuel cells in the future, at the NYK Tokyo Container Terminal.
NYK Bulk & Projects Carriers Ltd.
- The company has restructured the business process at B/L counters to make some operations paperless, such as sending B/L copies to customers in a PDF format.
- B/L original forms have been replaced with environmentally friendly paper made from certified forest paper* and raw materials from other controlled sources and manufactured at a Green Printing** certified mill.
At this conference, Kazunori Ogisu, managing director of Bright Innovation Co., Ltd.,*** gave a speech titled "Trends toward a Decarbonized Society and Initiatives Required of Corporations," explaining global trends in environmental issues as well as a stance on TCFD and other information disclosure initiatives.
In addition, Tomoyuki Koyama, senior managing executive officer at NYK, sent a message to the group companies, saying, "Although there are various environment-related regulations and issues in each business, I hope that you will meet the expectations of stakeholders and respond to the demands of society by working diligently.”
On February 3, NYK released the NYK Group ESG Story, which aims to further integrate ESG into the company’s management strategy and promotes activities that contribute to the achievement of the SDGs through business activities. In September, the group also decided to set a long-term target of net-zero emissions of greenhouse gas (GHG) by 2050 for the NYK Group's oceangoing businesses.
