NYK has been recognized for the first time with a bronze rating in the 2021 PRIDE Index,* a recognition based on an evaluation of LGBTQ initiatives in the workplace.
The PRIDE Index was initiated in 2016 by the nonprofit "work with Pride" (wwP) with the aim of creating a workplace where sexual minorities can work comfortably in Japan.
In its annual award rankings, wwP evaluates and recognizes companies according to their overall score in the five indicators of Policy, Representation, Inspiration, Development, and Engagement/Empowerment.
NYK has established a NYK Code of Conduct,** which is a set of guidelines for correct behavior to be followed by directors and employees. The code embodies the Group’s corporate philosophy and the NYK Business Credo, and reads, "We respect human rights and diverse cultures, and do not discriminate on the basis of race, creed, religion, gender, sexual orientation or gender identity, nationality, age, origin, mental or physical disability, or illness."
As part of this effort, NYK established an LGBT consultation service in 2019 to provide a system for sexual minorities and related people to consult with the company about their concerns and issues in the workplace. In addition to raising awareness annually among participants through e-learning for employees, the company raises awareness of various topics related to human rights during Human Rights Week in December, and these efforts were comprehensively evaluated.
On February 3, NYK released the NYK Group ESG Story, which aims to further integrate ESG into the company’s management strategy and promotes activities that contribute to the achievement of the SDGs (Sustainable Development Goals) through business activities. NYK will continue to work to enhance the workplace environment in which employees with diverse backgrounds can work together, demonstrate their human potential, and work with peace of mind and success in the global field.
