During the month of December, NYK offered scholarships to 80 outstanding Chinese students at two maritime universities in China. This was the 20th consecutive year for NYK to demonstrate its corporate social responsibility (CSR) through the company’s dedicated support of maritime education.
On December 9, an online awards ceremony was held for Shanghai Maritime University (SMU), where 36 students were recognized for their academic excellence and fine demeanor. They were encouraged to develop themselves into socially responsible and intelligent young Chinese having international visions. Those in attendance included Mr. Hiroyasu Takaizumi, NYK chief representative for China, and Mr. Shi Xin, vice president of SMU.
Mr. Takaizumi expressed his appreciation to the university for continuously providing the students a safe environment for study during the COVID-19 pandemic. He also emphasized his respect of the students for continuing their studies in such a challenging situation. He introduced NYK’s response to the pandemic and encouraged students to join the maritime industry after graduation to make the most of the experience and specialist knowledge acquired from their time at the university.
Mr. Shi expressed his appreciation and respect to NYK for its long-standing support of education and training for new generations of the shipping industry.
NYK also offered scholarships to 44 students of Dalian Maritime University. Awarding ceremony was planned on December 23rd but was suspended considering the current situation.
NYK has continued this activity to fulfill the company’s social responsibility and awarded dedicated scholarship to 1,290 students at SMU and DMU since 2001.NYK Group will continue to support maritime education to contribute to global trade and society.
