On August 7, 20 NYK executive officers and a group of six vessel captains and chief engineers held a meeting at NYK headquarters in Tokyo to openly exchange opinions about the safe operation of vessels that the NYK Group is managing and operating.
This meeting is part of NYK’s two-month Remember Naka-no-Se safety campaign,* and is chaired by NYK president Hitoshi Nagasawa, who oversees NYK’s Safety and Environmental Management Committee** so that top management can exchange opinions directly with captains and chief engineers to further develop practical measures with respect to safe operation of our vessels.
At the meeting, President Nagasawa commented, “This conference is one of our safety improvement activities. I would like ship and shore members to work together to address various issues, including ship emission controls that will be strengthened from 2020. In addition, I want us to reach greater levels by deepening communication between ship and shore, and sharing issues and progress of improvement with management.
President Nagasawa also visited Heritage Leader, a pure car and truck carrier, on August 5 at Daikoku Terminal, and exchanged opinions with the captain and engineer about the importance of communication and issues related to strengthened regulations.
NYK will further advance its safety operations, improved through deep communication between ships and shore, and will aim to strengthen the company’s safety management systems, which will improve the company’s competitiveness.
* Remember Naka-no-Se Safety Campaign
To ensure that the lessons learned from the Diamond Grace oil spill in July 1997 remain fresh, NYK conducts a two-month safety campaign every year from July 1. During this period, top management at NYK reconfirms the importance of safe operations with all NYK employees.
** Safety and Environmental Management Committee
