NYK to Sponsor Events to Celebrate the 85th "Birthday" of NYK Hikawamaru

April 21, 2015

NYK Hikawamaru

NYK Hikawamaru, a museum ship currently moored in front of Yamashita Park in the port of Yokohama, will soon be celebrating its 85th “birthday.” Christened “Hikawa Maru” in April 1930, the ship transported cargo and passengers between Japan and Seattle before being requisitioned by the government to serve as a hospital ship during World War II. Shortly after the war ended, the ship resumed its pre-war service before being decommissioned in 1961 and then moored in front of Yamashita Park. In 2003, the City of Yokohama deemed the ship a tangible cultural property because it had come to be recognized over the years as a symbol of Yokohama city.

On 25 April, NYK will sponsor the below events to mark the ship’s 85th “birthday.”

1.   NYK Hikawamaru birthday cookie
A special birthday cookie will be presented to the first 850 guests from 10:00 a.m.

2.   Flower exhibition
A beautiful flower arrangement for each year — 85 in total, arranged by N Flower Design School — will be exhibited on board the ship all day.

3.   Captain Hammer balloons
Balloons featuring Captain Hammer, the mascot of NYK Hikawamaru, will be presented to children all day as long as supplies last.

4.   Concert by Yokohama Boys and Girls Choir
A concert by the Yokohama Boys and Girls Choir will be held on the open deck of NYK Hikawamaru from 14:30 to 15:00. (In case of rain, the concert will be held inside the ship.)

5.   Photos with Captain Hammer
Photos with Captain Hammer can be taken from 13:00 to 13:30 on the ship’s open deck. (In case of rain, Captain Hammer will be on the ship’s covered promenade deck.)

Also of note, the lighting on board NYK Hikawamaru was switched to LEDs this month, resulting in a 95 percent reduction in power consumption. NYK will continue its efforts to introduce energy-saving technologies throughout the company.
