Since April 1, 2006, NYK has calculated the Energy Efficiency Operational Indicator (EEOI) for over 110,508 voyages by the 904 vessels in operation for the company. This accumulated knowledge has then been fed back to vessels during operation as a part of NYK's fuel-reduction activities. To further improve the reliability of the EEOI, NYK is now introducing Prime Ship-GREEN/EEOI, a system offered from April by third-party Nippon Kaiji Kyokai (ClassNK) for EEOI calculations and analyses. On May 11, the NYK fleet received ClassNK’s first certification, indicating that EEOI calculations using the new system were done in accordance with the International Maritime Organization (IMO)* guidelines.
EEOI is an indicator to measure the CO2?emission performance of ship operations, which has been formulated by the IMO. The EEOI has been designed as a monitoring tool for the implementation of the Ship Energy Efficiency Management Plan (SEEMP),** the compulsory implementation of which is under discussion at the IMO, and also yields important data used in evaluating the effects of NYK's CO2 emissions reduction.
Ahead of the obligatory implementation of SEEMP, NYK made the NYK Save-Bunker Manual and has provided it to all company vessels since January 2009. The manual contains information on the best practices for efficient operational measures that vessels can implement voluntarily. Based on the manual, NYK vessels are doing their utmost to save fuel and to “visualize ecological efforts” by using EEOI figures. By receiving certification from a third party, ClassNK, NYK can offer more reliable data to its vessels.
Through effective use of the NYK Save-Bunker Manual, the NYK Group continues to strive for optimal operation with the aim of improving EEOI and contributing to a reduction of greenhouse gas emissions.

**Ship Energy Efficiency Management Plan: A plan to optimize operations and reduce CO2 emissions through the most effective management of factors such as vessel speed, route selection in consideration of sea currents and weather, and appropriate maintenance, while conducting self-monitoring of EEOI.
